How To Add Salt to Your Saltwater Swimming Pool

Adding salt to your swimming pool is a crucial step in maintaining a clean, healthy saltwater system.

Follow these straightforward steps for effective salt addition:

Step 1: Work Out How Much Salt Is Needed

Before adding any salt, determine the exact amount your pool needs. This calculation depends on:

  • Your current salt level
  • The target salt level for optimal chlorinator function

Most saltwater pools require between 1000-6000 ppm (parts per million), but always check your specific chlorinator’s manual for the recommended concentration.

Step 2: Prepare Your Pool

Before adding salt, remove all pool cleaners from the water to prevent potential corrosion from direct salt contact. Once you’ve calculated the proper amount of salt, open the bags near the pool’s edge for convenient pouring and minimal mess.

Step 3: Add Salt at Return Jets

Pour the salt directly over your pool’s return jets, avoiding the skimmer box area which could create filtration issues. The water flowing from the return jets helps circulate and distribute the salt evenly throughout your pool.  Purchase your salt today.

Step 4: Brush the Excess Salt

After adding the salt, use a pool broom/brush to brush any excess salt on the pool floor. This helps prevent any salt from accumulating and causing stains or damage to the pool surface. Proper brushing ensures the salt dissolves quickly and maintains an even balance throughout the water.

Preventing Surface Stains

Undissolved salt can cause staining on pool surfaces if left sitting. Always brush thoroughly immediately after adding salt to prevent costly surface damage and maintain your pool’s appearance.
